On September 7th, 2003, Chemo Chicks
set up shop at the 5th annual walk/run for awareness & hope to
benefit ovarian cancer, an event especially dear to my heart, as I am
still undergoing treatments for my ovarian cancer.
The event was held on the CBS
Studio Center lot in Studio City, CA. It was a beautiful sunny
California day and our colorful booth looked fabulous among the
variety of vendors. Mouthy Chick and I (Ultra Chick) manned the
booth, sold our Parkhurst hats and
Chick-a-Tude Tees, and
schmoozed up the crowd of runners and supporters.

750 runners and 140 walkers
participated in this year's event, which has doubled in size since
the first year in 1999, with prizes going to top finishers.
Approximately 25 thousand dollars was raised in support of research
and education specifically for ovarian cancer. We want to thank the
Ovarian Cancer Coalision (OCC) volunteers and event organizer, Gail McKenna, for all their
amazing efforts. Gail is a one women powerhouse and 14-year ovarian
cancer survivor.
The mission statement of the OCC is,
"
to educate the general public as well as the medical
community of the signs and symptoms of this disease, and to support
research to help find an early detection method and successful
treatment." I, for one, realize that it is due to grassroots
fundraising efforts like this one that the treatment options that
are saving my life today are available.
Of course, for me, the best part of
the day was meeting so many ovarian cancer survivors of 5, 10, and
20 plus years!
